By default, GeneaGenie searches fuzzily and automatically. This means it searches for names that resemble your search term, to catch typos or historical spelling variants. However, if you use a wildcard (such as * or ?), GeneaGenie switches off fuzzy mode and searches exactly according to your pattern. This gives you full control over specific name variations!

• The asterisk (*): Replaces an unlimited number of characters (e.g. Jan*en finds Jansen or Janssen).
• The question mark (?): Replaces exactly one character (e.g. Sm?t finds Smit or Smet).

Wildcards can be used in surnames, first names and place names alike. This applies not only to the main person, but also to the parents and partners.

Vrijwilligersrab – 4,617,643 records*

We are especially proud to announce our collaboration with the Vrijwilligersrab – West Flanders Deeds Database. As of today, the civil registry records — births and marriages — have been made searchable, together accounting for more than 4 million person references. The aim of this collaboration is to eventually make all sources from this platform searchable via GeneaGenie.

KADOC (KU Leuven) – 135,119 records

From this prominent institution, we have specifically connected the memorial card collection. This collection is an indispensable source for anyone searching for death records and personal details of people from the Flemish Brabant region.

Heemkring Zonnebeke – 30,018 records

A valuable local source for the Greater Zonnebeke region (Beselare, Geluveld, Passendale, Zandvoorde). The records contain references to more than 30,000 memorial cards and obituary notices.

Willy Ribbers – 54,960 records

This private collection contains an enormous treasure trove of memorial cards from mainly Gelderland and Overijssel (Twente). Found a match? Through the Willy Ribbers website you can easily request a digital copy of the original card.

Archief RK Friesland – 40,328 records

Specifically focused on the Roman Catholic heritage in Friesland. This source unlocks data from Catholic parishes, memorial cards and information about members of religious orders in the northern provinces.

De Vier Ambachten – 30,851 records

The Heemkundige Kring De Vier Ambachten focuses on the historical region "De Vier Ambachten" and the Land van Saeftinghe. Their collection of memorial cards covers a unique cross-border area, including the ambachten (jurisdictions) of Hulst, Axel, Assenede and Boekhoute (such as Terneuzen, Biervliet, Sas van Gent, but also the Belgian Wachtebeke and Bassevelde).
